Reported to be the first drum machine in history, the Chamberlin Rhythmate Model 40 is an incredibly rare instrument. Mount Eerie’s Phil Elverum is putting his one on Reverb.
Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie fame is selling his Chamberlin Rhythmate Model 40. Head over to Reverb if you’re keen on picking up a piece of history.
The primitive device was made in limited numbers and is based on 14 tape loops that contain samples of real drum performances. It also has a spring reverb, similar to those found in old guitar amps.
Elverum originally inherited the machine from his great uncle, who was an amateur musician. It went onto feature on countless recordings out of the Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington.
As you can imagine, the price tag attached to such a rare piece is eye-watering. So if you feel like parting with US$9,500, Phil Elverum is waiting for your call! In the meantime, check out his demo video below.
