Japanese artist Asuna’s 100 Keyboards is an immersive sound installation, featuring an array of cheap keyboards playing in unison. Best of all, he’s bringing the show to Australia this month.
100 Keyboards by Asuna features undulating waves of drones, clashing together to create a constantly evolving moiré effect for the ears.
Visually, the moiré effect happens when you see closely related patterns super-imposed on one another.
In this particular sonic context, its achieved by the slight discrepancies in tuning between the 100 different instruments, with their harmonics “beating” together, creating an incredibly luscious chorus sound.
