Fingerlab’s SK-51 app is a tribute to the Casio SK-1 and SK-5 sampling keyboards from the 80s. Notoriously cheap and gritty, they’ve nevertheless made their mark, being used by artists like Nine Inch Nails, Portishead and more.
The retro charm of the Casio SK-1 lives on through SK-51 app. Fingerlab have recreated the sounds, drum grooves and sampling capabilities of the original.
There are essentially two versions of the app, one free and another which can be unlocked with an in-app purchase.
The free version comes with three instruments, four sampling slots, three demo drums patterns, MIDI and Ableton Live support.
The paid version offers up 19 instruments, 21 demo drums patterns, phaser, delay and reverb, as well as live recording capability.
And why not augment the sounds? Check out The Pedal Zone’s demo on how to treat iPhone apps with effects pedals.
