Our live-room-to-be ‘the Garden‘ was a DA approved extension from way back since before the studio was open. That DA is about to expire! We have our sights set on getting the ball rolling on the space this year but it’s not cheap. Time for a charity ball perhaps?

Every project we work on has a set of limitations and I’ve come to embrace this as a good thing. The biggest and most compromising however is of course budget. The question “how long does an album take to record” is not easily answered* and when you’re talking to a prospective client with a limited budget saying the wrong thing is usually the end of the conversation. Planning becomes a really big part of getting it right and if you know where your strengths and weaknesses are, don’t be afraid to ask for exactly what you think would suit you best. My production style is very spontaneous and a lot of the quirky stuff that makes its way through to the final recording is often a result of those initial jam sessions. An idea I recently had was to help an artist in that initial stage and get tracks off the ground with a couple of days invested in production very early on. Have the artist take those sessions away and do the nuts and bolts at home (even if the nuts and bolts takes a few months) and then come back for the mix. A plan like that takes clarity and honesty and isn’t easy but its a great way to work. Of course the order and formula is different for everyone. I often reach out to other producers and engineers when I know their strengths are better suited. With the above project we decided to mix and master of the fly which is a new favorite way to master and embraced by some of the big boys in the game.

*Just about to finish a Circle album that we’ve been working on since April 2011.

Gear Development

There is no end to the amount of gear we could use. The limitations are space and money. If I had things my way I would have racks of pre-amps and compressors and EQs all set up ready to patch in off a Neve or SSL console. Alas this is not quite the case. There are however definite advantages to working out what is truly beneficial to the studio in an exponential way. There might be several things that could really make a difference. Recent advancements here are a new amp and mono speaker, re-tuning the control room with some simple furniture adjustments and hooking up the Otari’s VU”s so we can monitor ‘power’. Simple obvious stuff that really helps.

In light of some of this new found fun stay tuned for some small but very useful product development from yours truly with a little help from our friend Ivan Richards. ETA 2013 so sit tight.

Synth for Sale

In 2006 I recorded EGBDF and I thought it was a masterpiece. Not everyone agreed. I still think it was a pretty good effort. Great songs and great sounds. Some (very minor) copyright infringements and a Hartmann Neuron Synthesizer. Sadly the Neuron had a bit of a rest and decided not to wake up again so I’m selling it on eBay. Here is the link. I loved this keyboard and I’ll probably want to buy it back one day but for now, we need the space and a project synth is the last thing I have time for. We’ll always have Opanoni’s EGBDF to remind us of the Neuron’s awesome power!
